Yikes - Flora and the cf diet?

have just realised (after 3 years!)that Flora contains buttermilk. Presumably this means I shouldn't be giving it to DS2 who is on a gf/cf diet?Blush

I have constantly been amazed by how many of the margerine spreads actually contain dairy.

the only one I have found that doesn't is the Pure range - and even then that has colours/flavourings in!

usually I just don't bother with any for dd1.

we did go through a phase of using cocnut oil - I should look into that again, i think.

I think I might try the Pure olive spread.

Have had a couple of possible biomed light bulb moments while in France - firstly we ran out of Swedish Glace soya icecream and I remembered a recipe I'd read about for banana ice cream - freeze sliced banana, then puree. It's delicious - really creamy. Then we ran out of Flora and I had a frustrating search in Intermarche for a margarine that didn't contain 'produits de lait'. Finally found one - but then checked the empty Flora tub and saw buttermilk listed.

After two days of no soya and no buttermilk DS2 had the most horrendous night ever - stomach pains, straining to go to the loo with no success, crying etc. Have never seen him like it before. But since then(and doing poo!) he has been on increasingly good form - much more responsive, verbal and settled. Who knows? Could just have been a reaction to 16 days in a camper van! But I'm going to try going soya free for a while at least - and definitely cut the Flora.

Yep. We use the pure spreads, though I'm annoyed because our sainsburys has stopped stocking the sunflower and only has the soya, now. They do their own brand dairy free sunflower spread and M&S do one, too, though that's a bit hard to spread, straight from the fridge.

I've never tried it, but olive oil sets at about 7C and I've heard of some people keeping that in the fridge for their sarnies.

Ooh yes it does - we found that out when we kept it in the fridge in our camper van. never thought of using it as a spread though....worth considering.

Someone on Treating Autism has just suggested that the reaction to stopping the Swedish Glace may have been a withdrawal from sugar - apparently it's chock full of the stuff (obvious really!).

Can't get the Pure olive spread anywhere around here! Anyone know where I can buy it? Even Goodness Direct don't seem to stock it.

You can get a couple of the different types in sainsbury's here, and waitrose. Ocado has it as well (not sure how central their distribution warehouse is, but don't think they have too many different centres)

I thought goodness direct did stock, but haven't looked for a while as I use occado

Vitalite is also cf and you can get that in any supermarket.

Oooh, that's good to know. I haven't seen it for a while, though. Does it still have the really good re-usable tubs?

They have changed the tubs so doesn't stand out as much, I have bought it in asda, saisburys and Tescos.

I'll have a look next time we're in sainsburys, then, since they've stopped selling the Pure that we like. DH has been having to pick it up in Asda on his way home from work.

Just to add that the Pure sunflower is ok for baking but the Pure soya is supposed to be rubbish.

That's another reason I like the pure sunflower. It makes lovely light cakes and isn't bad for pastry with a bit of trex mixed in, so long as I try extra hardnot to over-work the flour (though I sometimes do add a bit of butter, too, for flavour, since lactose is our collective problem, rather than casein and we can tolerate small amounts, most days).

I found some Vitalite, yesterday and that's only 56% fat, which tells me it'd be great for spreading on bread, but no good for baking, which I do a lot of, so we left it on the shelf. I'll probably go back to the M&S dairy free spread when we can't get to somewhere that sells the Pure.
