Just read this. Sounds like a fantastic breakthrough! Could be really good news for so many parents.

It does sound good, hopefully this does happen. So many "breakthroughs" reported in the media are "2 or 3 years" away, never to be heard of again.

My dd was diagnosed in May, and the process affected her badly. She's been denying the dx ever since, claiming the clinical psych was wrong. Now the Ed Psych wants to spend 1.5 hours with her as part of her statement assessment :(

It's ds' s turn next, in Oct........

I hope it does turn out to be a real breakthrough.
I have 5...soon to be 6 children (6th due in Dec) and 2 of whom have disabilities.
My child who is quad CP and so visibly 'different' if you like gets a lot of understanding and compassion from people.
However my son who has ASD gets a very different reaction, many people still don't recognize the condition and even some family memebers have implied they think he's just a bit slow, awkward or difficult (even though he has hypertonia too). I think if people knew it was that his brain was physiologically different to theirs then maybe they'd have a little more compassion and understanding for him too.
Well i can hope anyway !
(i used to post on here under Jo5677, name changed)

Good luck in Oct Peaceflower.

Brilliant news re this new brain scan being developed.

As it shows the differences in brain design we have, it should be a really good way to help to explain and show what treatments and therapies really do make a difference, and which ones are just people making money out of autism.

I think this is fantastic news. Can you imagine ( obviously in years to come).. HVs, parents, gps etc querying a possable issue, straight off to refer for a scan and then have a much clearer answer... Leading to early intervention, without the years of fighting for help and trying to get into a very lacking ( IMO) system... That basically causes huge stress on whole families... Sometimes for years!

I've just read about a 10% failure rate with this way of diagnosis atm.

I guess that would leave some people in not such a good situation if outwardly it was obv they had autism but they couldn't detect it on a scan Sad.

Still great news for those it could help diagnose though and hopefully the failure rate would lessen with more research.

SanctiMoanyArse · 11/08/2010 11:38

Saw this today

I think it's good, but I think will also now 'create' a new syndrome or two for people who ahve an ASD resentation but no physiology.

Which is fine as long as it doesn't prevent service receipt.

It's still a long way off though.

What I woulds say though is there still could be an aissue of access to assessment such as that which seems common now. And scans can be a long wait- ds3 is having an EEG at this very minute (with DH) but we've been raising concerns for 3 years now!

Amber: I agree with you on this one too. Hmm Can only be a good thing if it helps parents avoid programmes or professionals that are just a waste of time and money.

Also may help remove, for once and for all, the "Refrigerator Mother" or "Bad Parenting" stigma and help extended family members feel they are able to better understand.

But, more than anything, I hope that in the not too distant future, this will lead to more choices for my lovely DS.

A friend p[ointed out the only real downside (asuming provision for people who don't show physiologiocal traces but dispaly behaviours is maintained) adn that was that her sone owuld have to have been sedated and forced into hospital to undertake a scan. hadn't even occurred to me.
