Bed-time meltdown 3yr old with ASD

Hi There
Looking for some help with my just-3 yr old DS2, diagnosed with ASD in the last couple of months.

I'm completely new to this ASD lark, and am completely in the dark viz disciplinary methods that work with ASD kids.

Up to now, my DS2 has been a great sleeper, has gone to bed with no probs whatsoever - would even put himself to bed if we weren't quick enough about it and he decided he was tired. But in the last number of weeks, he's getting progressively worse at bedtime, has will keep coming out of his room (for hours). My strategy has been just to consistently return him, no big reaction/not much talk, etc. Prob is, its just not working, and he's getting progressively more distressed in his room. The only change has been that he stands by the door crying rather than coming out. He seems really distressed, not sure if its frustration because he doesn't want to be in there, or fear of something?

The last 2 nights we have lain beside him and he has fallen asleep in minutes. I really dont want to introduce this as a habit - its hard enough to get out in the evening as it is, and this will make it practically impossible. Can anyone suggest anything, or have any insight into whats going on?

thanks

Possibly a scare/nightmare in the night which has confused and frightened him?

If it were me, I'd stay with him whilst he nodded off. Gradually move away from the bed each day and wean him off like that.
