SN children

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Would you take this, or tell them to shove it?!

DD2 preschool letter came today. They have only offered her 2 sessions instead of the 5 they said they could offer, and have funding more.
They also have given her afternoons which means i have to change DD1's (HFA) routine aswell.
WE have a TAC meeting arranged 3 weeks into term to discuss DD2 and they have applied for 1 to 1 funding too.
Im thinking of telling them to shove it because it will upset DD1s routine and DD2 is going to get very confused only going 2 days a week (tues &thurs).
What would you do?? I have no way of talking to anyone from preschool till sept.
Oh they said they have too many children with special needs in the morning but she'll have 1 to 1

You need to speak to them in Sept and explain the implications for you of having the afternoon sessions.

I'm not sure they should be saying they have too many children with SN. They could be criticised for discrimination. If she has 1 to 1 it shouldn't be an issue anyway.

Does she have to start before the TAC meeting? I'd wait to discuss it there before you disrupt your family's routine.

yes she is meant to start 2 weeks before the TAC, straight into new term for DD1. The CDC decided preschool was best plan for her as they seem to think it will help her and they want more "proffessional imput" into her dx.

Just found out why they have only offered 2 sessions! funding for 1-1 will only cover 5 hours a week
Have told preschool adviosry that unless its mornings and 5 sessions that she wont be going.

we have 12.5 increasing to 15 from Sept - I thought everyones must be going up to 15 from Sept?

Even my non SN children didn't enjoy nursery 2 half days IME 3 times week is a minimum for it work for any child

How old is she? Is she entitled to the free 12.5 / 15 hours ie term after she's 3? If so it must be disability discrimination not to offer her the same as other children

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 04/08/2010 23:21

she is 3 in sept. She is entitled to 15 hours preschool care but they only offering 5 hours 1-1. I have explained she doesnt need it to manage her behaviour but to help her access things that arent self directed iyswim.
I have told Advisory teacher today that if we dont get mornings and more sessions she wont be going and they can explain why to the pead when we see her in Nov

if she is 3 in sept, then her nef fundng won't kick in til jan next year

some areas already do 15hrs a week

if she is entitled to 15 hrs free in sept, you can get them on their equal oppurtunities policy and all settings should be all-inclusive unless they have access issues they cannot get around (but even then they should not exclude but depends on the building)

shes entitled to the 2 year funding here because of DD1 and DH.
will look at the tread SLM, and to honest i couldnt give a damn if they see it as refusing support, they barely offer anything yet and oh we arent needy enough to access SS either
We have a TAC in sept, when she would have just had her first visit so guess I will fighting them all at that point.

DD was at nursery til June for 3 sessions a week = 9 hours with a 1-1 funded by Presens Team. Funded from the term after she was 3 but the first term we just paid the nursery fees and the LEA/Presens team paid the shortfall to fund the 1-1 worker. I was offered a 4th session but didn't want it but this would also have been 1-1.
So - it must be possible to get it.. as you say it's necessary in order for the child to access everything that it is on offer in the setting as well as for safety reasons. There's so much discrepancy in different areas but I wish you luck trying to get what you need.. It sounds like discrimination..

So in answer to your question. If you have the energy, I'd try and fight to get them to offer more. You are entitled to it..

sorry SLM who do I apply to for Statement? You might have always told me that

thanks, do include her reports to date? I just feel so bad, that im just not able to fight so hard for DD2 as i did for dd1 because of everything thats happening I guess what worries me is that imo DD2 is worse than DD1 because she holds more traits like handflapping, tiptoe walking and the echolalia and her behaviour can be very hard to manage somedays too
