Aargh just been given a summons for Jury Service again, every year they ask and I get a deferral for a year, then they ask straight away again when the year is up.

As if things aren't hard enough.

Have noone else to cope with DD and couldn't leave her with a stranger.

Is there no way of getting out of it for that reason?

They do take notice of a consultant's letter if you work in a hospital and are short staffed/ busy because when I did it there was a medical secretary whose boss had written and she was excused a week.

they excuse me every year for being a carer then ask straight away a year later

I'm ineligible for jury service due to my depression - I only had to say that I was on antidepressants and I've never heard from them again. As far as I know they didn't confirm any of this information with my GP, so anyone could say the same to avoid having to do it.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/07/2010 13:47

wow. I think they must be quite strict herd! Thanks for the advice and tips!

I have been excused due to being pregnant!!! Had to laugh, could have been deferred but they've excused me for life!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/07/2010 18:20

I don't think they will excuse you for life here unless you have very very good reason, they seem really strict in Scotland.

i live in scotland and have a life long exemtion from jury duties, due to my sons disabilities he is 36 year old now and ive never been called in 30 of them.

he has severe epilepsy ,no speech, severe learning disability, slight cerabral palsy.
NEAD. and daycare finishes at 3 so am required to be in for him coming home also on call for taking him to A&E if required.

Hoping I get a longer exemption this time now my DD gets higher rate DLA, last year I was deferred but I got another summons almost EXACTLY to the day the 12 months were up..do they think she will have been cured by then!!

The letter says I'm excused indefinatly! I read it a number of times because I couldn't believe it but that is what it says. The only reason I couldn't do it at the time was I was 34 weeks pg with twins so risk of giving birth at the time was getting rather high.

Surely they can work out that your dd isn't going to be cured a year on!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/07/2010 20:06

Maybe I need to get pregnant

I think they just have it in for me, I was excused for my own medical reasons before too, twice, both genuine as I have health problems, if I didn't or didn't have DD I'd quite enjoy jury service.

fanjo- we are twins - I was blathering on about my fears of being summoned for jury service on here only last week!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/08/2010 08:49

You are quite unlucky if you are my twin!

Had nice sleepless night last night worrying about Jury Service, I hate things like this being in the hands of some nameless official who could decide to make life very difficult indeed!!

Phew! Just got letter declaring me exempt!!!

OP posts:

I've returned my jury form stating that i suffer from depression and i'm on medication which i hope will mean that i'm exempt from jury service. I'm a single mum who doesn't get a lot of help with childcare so i would find it really difficult to attend jury service. Just waiting for a reply. Does anyone know that if you suffer/have suffered from depression, does this mean that you are exempt from jury service for life?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 04/08/2010 19:27

I think if it is severe you can be declared exempt, might need a doctor's letter though.

I don't think just having ever had depression would mean you were exempt for life though as then half the country probably would be.

OP posts:
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 04/08/2010 20:03

That maybe came out wrong, I am not belittling severe depression at all, have friends with it and have had depression myself..just that lots of people have had an episode so I don't think that alone would exempt you.

Maggie1973 · 12/08/2010 12:56

I have just been declared exempt from Jury Service which is a big relief as i am a single parent and would have a nightmare trying to sort out childcare. I think anyone with childcare issuses should automatically be exempt from jury service.
