Hey,

I was wondering if anybody had heard of brain gym or actually used it with their children?

I have ds age 9 with dyspraxia. Waiting for an OT referral which will take months and wanting to try some stuff at home.

Thankyou.

Some schools use it. Sessions that involve fine and gross motor skills practice. Also cross body movements which help build and reinforce neuro pathways in the brain (apparently).

Supposed to help thinking skills, concentration and movement.

The school I work at uses it. Children have shown some improvement, I'd say so worth a go.

Our village nursery has used it for a while in the baby room. the girls were adamant that they saw results and if nothing else the children enjoyed it and seemed calmer afterwards.

I'm with Ben Goldacre. No harm in having a quick jiggle around when you've been sitting for a while. That's obvious.

There's no need for all that money to have been spent on consultants basically telling you that, however, disguised with bollocks 'science'.

We have a friend who is an osteopath. He showed me that ds was right hand and leg dominant but left eye dominant!!.I found that very interesting. He has give us some fun stuff to do that gets both hemispheres of the brain working together, which is what we need. He speaks from experience with a son with Dyspraxia.

Will still get a book on brain gym. There will be sceptics for everything and it won't suit everybody.

Also investigate retained reflexes before deciding - because I think they are both based on the same principle.

But, I agree with being pro-active. Do a sensible amount of research - then just choose something and go with it. Even if it doesn't work you will still have learnt something an be closer to finding something that will help.

I work in a SN school and we do it. My DDs PS school did Primary movement as a study for a University and they saw a vast improvement apparently.

ds2's school use it with loads of kids, lots of exercises involving crossing the midline.

I don't have a clue if it works but one of the teachers does it with her entire class for a couple of minutes each morning.
