Vocal stimming

the last few days ds has started to make a noise every few seconds, like clearing his throat. Is this stimming?

Trying to work out why he is doing this, so i can then in turn try to work out what to do about it?

Most things that ds does ie rubbing at his skin, pulling his eyelashes etc, seem to be a coping strategies and serve a purpose for him. Is this a similar thing?

He started at a new school recently, if left alone, will it pass eventually?

My Dd3 does this sometimes too, it can go on for dys or weeks. I think it is stress related. She is doing it at the moment cos its changeover from school to holidays.
I tend to ignore it to be honest but that is because she is the kind of person who feeds off any kind of attention, positive or negative and she would probably do it more if I made an issue of it.
Sometimes she hums too.

Thanks ineed, it started about a week ago and has become more frequent over the last few days, its now every few seconds, he's throat is going to get very sore, still this might make him stop.

It does tie in with the changeover from school to holidays, what you say makes perfect sense.

I have been ignoring it, will continue and hope it doesnt last too long!

My lad does this A LOT and it's usually worse towards end of/ beginning of term. He also does other more musical vocal tics too, and often repeats sentences over and over.
I'd try to ignore it if you can, and hope it stops when he's more settled.

DS does this on and off, a throat-clearing noise. He started doing it last spetember. For about 3-4 months it was awful, he was doing it sometimes 20 times a minute. I didn't count but it was constant every few seconds, even in bed we could hear him doing it.
Paed said it was defo a vocal stim.
He has calmed down now with this in recent months, with occasional 'bad' days now and then.

Forgot to say, DS is 4.8 and asd.
I got worried when the troat noise stated, he even went through a phase of blinking hard and rolling his eyes. I'd read it could be a sign of Tourettes but paed said it was ASD stimming related not a Tourette tic.
Hth.

I was just going to start a thread about dd1, she has never had a vocal stim until now (well i think its a stim), after every senence she say 'pfffft' (kind of like the noise you make when you are disapointed of suprised about something), i have found the more times i mention it to her the worse it gets. I just hope its just a temporary thing.

Dd3 repeats phrases too, I think she likes the sound of certain speech patterns. The other morning she walked round and round in crcles in the kitchen saying "I can't put my shoes on" in a sing song voice for about 10 minutes. Luckily it was only me and her in the house cos it would have driven Dd2 and OH barmy.
Sometimes I do get fed up with it and tell her to zip!! btu usually I try to ignore her.I must remember to tell the pead next time I see her, a bit more evidence might get her off the fence and onto a dx. LOL

Thanks everyone, its reassuring to know ds is isnt the only one and im not the only one being driven bonkers by it

He has been making grunting noises tonight too, inbetween the clearing throat noises, even when he is talking, its one word then clear throat or grunt, then another word.

Then to top it all off, i have a buzzy biting thing in the bedroom, which keeps buzzing around my ears and when i switch the light on i cant find it and dp's snoring, so i cant sleep ARGH!

DS experiments with new noises a lot - sometimes I think it's out of stress, sometimes I think he just likes to hear the sound of grunting, or shrieking or whatever the noise of the moment is.
I see as a sort of 'rapping' iyswim; sometimes it's almost like it's a creative thing for him, like singing or making up stories for other kids.
So it doesn't bother me that much; DS tends to do it more at home, almost as if he knew it's more OK at home than at nursery, for instance
