SN children

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Anyone heard the phrase "executive functioning"?

Emailed DD's OT for an appointment as although she's doing really well physically her behaviour since the hols has been a bit shocking.

So the OT has come back withthis ( as well as a few other things and we are seeing her next week)

This actually sums up DD at the moment - anyone heard this - or is it just another way of saying things are not quite right...

Yes, I have read about this when looking into my ds neuro problems, I think it's a really good description too.
In some book from the library I found descriptions of symptoms that can be referred to specific parts of the brain that were under-developed or damaged, although no advice was offered how to overcome any of it, only how/what to observe. And at the basic laymans level this is better than mri.

With my ds we went along nutrition route, adding fatty acids (omegas, fish oils) and changing to gluten free. Another book that goes along the nutrition route is "Is this my child?" by a chiropractor who also has some exercise suggestions.
Behavious is often linked to fatty acid deficiencies, you could also add vit B for calming/relaxing results, Zn also good and often deficient.

Did you think that diet made a big difference?

DD eats a reasonable, if limited, diet though is very obviously sensitive to sugars & additives. Come to think of it though she's been asking for pasta nearly every day recently - maybe I need to get some gluten free
Would love her to take some omegas but haven't succeeded so far...

hi b2b, nutrition made a completely amazing difference to my ds and his problems were non-responsive behaviour, learning, balance, neurology mostly. But there are loads of symptoms linked to deficiencies and there is lots you can do at home to help.

Maybe try to be inventive with omegas etc, break up a capsule and stir it into a dish already plated (so you don't cook it).
We actually started with flaxseeds (omega3)that I ground over any foods, they don't taste of anything.

Maybe try cutting back to wheat at one meal only, we have learnt to eat w/o wheat completely, the closest we get to bread is rice cakes and only really when travelling/away. And you can easily replace wheat pasta with gluten-free as an experiment, a bit more expensive but you can't live on it alone anyway, so padd it all out with lovely veg + some meat.

And do some reading on the subject, it's fascinating.
