hi, ds has just had a neuropscychological assessment and most of his results have come back either low average or low. in the report there is reference to things being within bordeline clinical range, eg attention deficit/hyperactivity. does his mean he is showing traits of these ie are they more significant that being low??

have appt on tuesday to discuss but am a little confused. any help appreciated.

It most likely comes down to where you draw the line.

So for IQ (just as an example) 85-100 is the normal range, below 85 is abnormal.
If you score at 90 at the bottom of the clincial range but not abnorla.

It sounds like your child is towards the edge of the normal range for these features but still inside it.

I can't be sure but that's what it sounds like.

Agree with the other posters, the verbal descriptions depend on cut-off points. And those may be arbitrary.

Are the centiles reported? If so, below the 5th centile means 95% score higher than your son; below the 1st means in the bottom1%. Below 50th means below average ie like half the population. If you don't have the centiles it may be worth asking for them. The old red book height and weight charts use centile lines which might help you get a visual idea of them.

Don't assume the school etc understand the report. My friends child was sub 1st centile for auditory comprehension ie has no idea what is said most of the time. And the school report said 'needs to make more effort in listening' & nothing about needing to change how they tried to get info across.

thanks for your help, ds is in 6th centile for most of the things assessed.
