i am just wondering what everyones opinionS and experiences are with transport to and from school provided by their LAs. my ds is getting a statement and they are surgesting a school that is quite far, for which they would provide transport, but my gut feeling is that i do'nt want this.

I would ask for a copy of the transport policy when making decisions.

A friend has ahd hiuge problems this last eyar as she chose an SNU that wasn't closest to her home / allocated by LEA and then the LEA announced they would only fund travel to closest suitable provision; she doesn't drive, it's a good ten miles away and no buses there (a lot of lcoal provision absed alongside village schools with limited transport access)

She has had to agree to pay LEA a top up for transport but it's something to be borne in mind I think.

WRT to ds3's school transport, the escort is wondrous (have nominated her for an NAS Hero award). She does times tables with him, learns song words, and thas become a real benefit to have in his life. The first day we handed him over I was scared but it's been positive.

My daughter has transport and her Escort is really really lovely too! The advice given is great and seconded.

Ds will be on transport there coming round to meet him couple times over the summer, but I admit that thought of handing him over not. Take myself is scarey

My daughter has used the transport since she was 5 and is now 12.

We have been very lucky with the current driver and escort and hope they will carry on, we find out today! The escort does reading and chats all the time and the driver is fantastic too. She broke up yestererday and got a lovely present from them.

I feel especially as she has got older that it gives her extra independence and she now is allowed to go out alone when she sees them arrive.

thank you, for all the info, i will keep it in mind but after visiting the school i think he will be better off at the local school, there did not seem much difference between the two, in fact the one the board sent me to look at has toilets so small you would never get an adult in there with him.

i came back to the first draft of his statement, and im not sure if thats detailed enough. it says staff will do his speech thearpy twice a week, and lots of other stuff that will be adult surported but nothing about 1-1. there is only a teacher and 1 ta per class, so where is this adult coming from.

so i guess thats my next job.
