My ds (ASD/ADHD)has had it with school now. As we get to end of term each time he finds it all too much.

Is it just us?

No, the last two weeks of any term are usually very difficult for any child on the spectrum, summer term more so because of transition issues. I've got two in my class, numerous in the school and one at home, it's not just you.
We're at the ' three more forced wake-ups' stage and he's 15!

the transistion is bad anough but lots of different things start to happen at the end of terms and timetables and struture start to go out the window...hard for any child on the spectrum

There's no learning taking place this last week of term. Just school trips, Leavers' Assemblies, 'fun day', class parties and assembly rehearsals (last year at primary school for DS). Vague, unpredictable structure and some shorter days.

Frankly, I don't blame the kids. I've just about had it with school too...

We are suffering end-of-term-itis here, too.
DD1 is really struggling -had some self harm issues, she can't sleep etc
I actually feel sick today and I know it's all of the worry and apprehension about the next few weeks and the new term.

My DS is in Year 10 and I am cautiously optimistic that he will actually make it to the end of term. Usually he ends up on part time school for the last week of term at Christmas and the summer term.
Once the routine has gone he usually gets more and more stressed and we keep him at home voluntarily. So no, you aren't the only one and it can go on for a very long time.

I've had enough of school now but DS who is now in Y6 does not seem to mind too much.

We haven't had much in the way of formal learning since the beginning of term. Its all been trips out, school sports day and play and leavers assembly.

DS2 is happy enough but looks awful - tired, pale, dark circles, unfocused gaze...

We have it her too, Dd3 doesn't even know which class she is going to be in yet, it drives me mad. She told me yesterday that if she gets MRS x for her teacher she is moving to the school down the road. A tempting idea at the moment. The Headteacher claims to have staffing issues every year so that she doesn't have to tell the kids which teacher they are having until the last day or day before. I am sure it is so the Parents don't have time to complain. I have had children at the school for 10 years so she cant possibly have staffing issues every year.
Having a child with Asd type difficulties, this situation amongst others is beginning to wear a bit thin now and I may be voting with my feet soon.

Definitely not just you.

DS1 has been raging since he got home from school and insisting he's not going, tomorrow. He's saying it's because of the weather, but basically, all the upheaval is totally getting on top of him.

Spinkle · 21/07/2010 21:52

We've waved the white flag now. DS can have a day at home with me tomorrow

Thanks for the replies - as ever, it's great to know we're not the only ones
