My daughter has ASD she was diagnosed in January, she has been on SA and SA+ since reception(she is now about to go to year 4)and has also been on and has just come off the CAF (only because the guidelines are she should not be on a CAF for more than 6 months......she was on it for 19months!!) the school is generally great, however I have asked about a statement I have been told the council will not statement as the school cannot recieve anymore funding. my daughter has in her class 3 other statemented children 2 of which are autistic (not sure about the 3rd) they all have their own TA's so C will not get any help apart from one hour on a Wednesday if it is deemed 'required'. Unfortunately her school report is not very good at all even though I am repeatedly told she is progressing, infact I have not been able to find anything in any subject apart from science that is positive (apart from she has room to improve next year).
Is this correct? can she not recieve any more help? is their a maximum number of TA's in a class?? I feel as though I am being fobbed off with comments such as 'its alot of paperwork when they will not process it because she is not bad enough'
If anyone can help I will be much appreciated. I am off to an IEP tonight.

Hi IneedT. Glad to see you found us!

I'm sorry that you've been discouraged from applying for a statutory assessment. You can apply as a parent - it's better if the school will support you, but that doesn't necessarily have to be the case. Here is the link to the Ipsea model letter.

I agree that good evidence is the key. Keep hold of any reports or letters sent to you. It's also a good idea to get hold of your child's educational record - you can request this under the Data Protection Act. You can send in evidence to the LA which shows her lack of progress.

Hi IneedTea. Well done for realising that the school have got things slightly wrong, here.

Ask yourself a question or two, and you soon see that it just cannot be true: Would your daughter need less help if the other 2 children in her class suddenly changed schools? NO. Is your daughter receiving any additional help? No.

The very first thing you need to know is that the issue is NEED not Funding. You need to learn to have on broken-record style tap "I am concerned about my daughter getting the help she needs, not the funding issues around it."

The SEN Code of Practice will tell you all about the special needs assessment and provision that your child may need, and you can get access to an online version (I don't have it to hand as my laptop is in for repair, but you can just google)

I know a m/s school where 3-4 TAs in a class is the norm!

The funding for statements follows the child so its irrelevant how many other children in a school have a statement its individual to that child

Good luck for tomorrow TG!
