dx aspergers disappearing?

just been sent this. Anyone know anything about it?

"heard directly from the mouth of a Speech and Language Therapist that apparently from 2013, following changes to the diagnostic manual, the diagnosis of Aspergers will no longer exist.

he said the DSMIV Manual was changing so guess this is something coming down from 'on high'"

what was her original diagnosis?
Do you think this spells good news or bad? eg. anyone with a diagnosis recognised as being on the spectrum, so hopefully an equalising effect. Or do you think it's an attempt to downplay (and avoid government spending? )

I heard about this a while ago.... but can't remember much about what was said! Not much use really.

I did a post on this a couple of months back - cant find in now of course!

apparently the American manual thingy has got rid of aspergers (no, they're not all cured) and it will now be classed as part of the autistic spectrum.

Lots of adults with aspergers were up in arms as they felt (rightly imo) that they had acceptance in society thanks to high profile aspergers speaking out and being - OMG NEARLY NORMAL - and certainly accepted in society as intelligent original people with something to offer.

Wish I could find original post as its more informative than my memory

Yes, everything is being lumped together. Including things like childhood disintegrative disorder.

Given the complexity and heterogeneity of autism I don't really see it as a good thing. Not clinically anyway. I suppose it might have some advantages for political/service provision reasons.

beammeupscotty · 15/07/2010 12:41

On the plus side if aspergers is lumped in with ASD they may get better provision as aspergers has sometimes a better slant put on it even though some of the behaviours are just as challenging.

Mrs Turnip,

but hopefully the dx will then splinter again but along better more sensory/processing based faultlines?

hope the PhD's going well.

This same manual lists 'hoarding' - you know the kind of thing: mounds of old newspapers so you cant get in the door - as a condition Thats me on a good day!
