Genetic Counsellers

I have a 5 year old Autistic boy, me and his step-father are thinking of having a child in the next year or two, but we're a bit worried of having another Autistic child. They say that Autism can be Genetic, so my son could've got it through me or his real father (whose not around). Has anyone been to or know much about Genetic Counsellers and is it worth it?

We were referred after our daughter's birth. She born born with a physical disability.

The genetics specialist was based in Manchester but we saw her at our local hospital, where she held a clinic.

Think DD was about 6 months old.

Apt consisted of her taking a full history with myself and DH. She reassured us on the day it wasn't genetic then sent us a very long detailed letter setting out what condition DD had and confirmed it wasn't genetic.

Can your GP refer you?

Hi, we have to go to Northwick Park shortly for Genetic Testing for my sons EDS, as this is both Autosomal dominant [happens because of a faulty gene and one parent having the disorder], as well as Autosomal recessive [ when both parents have the same faulty gene but do not suffer the disorder themselves] - making the parents carriers.
This test is done on bloods and biopsy, plus family history, photo's etc.
The best thing will be to speak to your GP, or the Autistic Society may have information that is more relavant to your sons condition. The information that you get back can be life altering for everyone and councelling is routine too. I wish you the very best of luck. x
