This will have to be quick as DS is screaming!

School is applying for SA.

Have sent home bit of form that relates to my views.

How detailed does this have to be?

Shall I set out all the stuff I was going to put in my own application?

Oh, can anyone confirm where I put all the sensory processing stuff? Sensory needs seems to apply to deafness etc??

DD's school applied for SA and they did(what I felt was) a very thorough report of her needs. I supported this with one sheet of A4 paper descrbing what I felt her difficulties were. When LA agreed to assess DD and I was asked again for my opinions I submitted virtually the same sheet of A4 paper with just a couple of minor adjustments. There was only about 6-8 weeks between initial application and LA agreeing to assess so to be honest not a great deal had changed at that time in regards progress of DD.
I did not use any legal terminology but I did use the phrase "DD will not be able to access the curriculum" as I think extra help for our DC's in school is all dependant on whether or not they can access the curriculum. Hope that helps.
LA agreed to 25 hours extra help a week for DD (starts reception in September)which we are extremely pleased with. Good luck!

Yes debs, lou031205 @ gmail dot com

The sensory processing stuff - do a section called 'Sensory processing issues'.

Bluesunbeam · 12/07/2010 20:53

We put the sensory processing into the sensory needs box. SENCo advised on that so hoping thats ok.

Sounds like your form is very similar to ours, SENCo found she could type it on line so extend the boxes - just not enough room.

I'm a little worried now as we haven't written huge amounts - hoping we've done enough.

Lougle · 12/07/2010 20:56

Sorry, missed that. No it's not Lougle, its lou031205

sugarcandymonster · 12/07/2010 20:58

I put sensory processing stuff under Sensory Needs. That heading is more geared to deaf/blindness etc but it's what I was advised too.

I wrote about 4 pages for my views - I was a bit naive at that stage and hadn't seen SEN COP. I did quite a thorough job for the Parental Advice once they'd agreed to assess though.

Hi debs

We ended up with 14 pages - i took a day off work and just did an essay on the life and times of ds. it was actually quite therapeutic. They agreed to assess and I find out on Wed if they will provide a statement (and if the 14 pages actually made any difference).

debs40 · 12/07/2010 23:53

It is 11 pages - is that too much!!!

i think part of doing 11 pages of well informed views on your child's strengths, weaknesses etc is that it sends a powerful message that you have put the effort in and you will not easily be fobbed off.

debs40 · 13/07/2010 00:12

I like that idea Crunchy thanks!

Well, school are being as good as their word and DS's teacher is filling in the form.

She even took me through it today.

However it is a stupid form with little boxes which leads them down a particular track - e.g. academic achievement.

She had missed loads of stuff out on cognition and learning but seemed willing to add stuff and she know has my FOURTEEN page parental views - yes I came home and added more to it after seeing the form!

She even apologised to me for school being slow to pick all this up and even obstructive saying......

WE SHOULD HAVE DONE BETTER!!

teach her the phrase "please see continuation sheet...."
