Just wondering if anyone has any tips or information.

Have nown for a while that DD (age 9) shows signs of dyslexia although school have always claimed she is fine at reading etc.

Had her privately assessed as my hunch was she just wasn't progressing as much as she should at school.

The assessment has come back as dyslexic, some form of dyspraxic and various attention issues.

Not sure where to go from here? School are notoriously poor at SEN provision - would most likely put her in lowest sets for everything and hope for the best - that's what's happened to other children diagnosed with similar issues. I'm tempted not to tell them actually (as they have clearly missed it altogether) but go down the outside tuition route.

There are no other schools around here that offer any specialist support so I'm not sure moving her is an option, plus she's really happy at her current school.

I just feel that if we do nothing we are failing her big time as she'll never achieve her potential if we don't.

TIA for any advice!

DS & DD both dyslexic and in independent sector so not quite same boat but both went to have help after school with specialist. Putting your DD in the bottom set and just hoping is not good enough.

Just because she is dyslexic does not mean that she cannot perform to a high standard but what she needs to do is to learn strategies to overcome her dyslexia so that everyday life isn't so hard and also help with new topics etc as they come up.

thanks clarice - can I ask how you found the specialist who helped your DC after school?

DS school had a list of tutors. Also the Helen Arkell Centre and another dyslexia organisation had lists.

Thanks Clarice - will check our local Dyslexia Action as school are beyond useless!

have schoolput her on sen register? Dyslexia action are good although you have to go to them for lessons and they are pricey I think. Patoss will have a list of specialist teachers in your area.

Thanks corn have never heard of Patoss. No, school don't accept that she's dyslexic. they think she's doing just fine!

when I had my ds assessed by dyslexia action I was told (by dyslexia action) that schools had to take into account an assesment by a chartered psychologist. The school may well not be able to interpret the report. Did the psychologist make any recommendations?

yes he has recommended specialist tuition in phonics and skills and occupational therapy. the school doesn't seem to offer anything in particular to dyslexic children as it expects parents to take them out of school instead and pay for extra tuition at DA and other places.

I'm just trying to get to grips with the system and am wondering what the school's obligations are? I'm assuming that she won't get a statement and therefore they have no legal obligation to provide anything extra for her? Is that how it works? Am a bit new to all of this but have had friends going through the system
