Here you'll find advice from parents and teachers on special needs education.

Are there any SALT or reception class teachers around.

Ds1 started school last september but was a july baby so isn't 5 yet.He has speech/communication delay.
His teacher called me into school last week and said she has now split the class into phonics groups.Ds is the bottom of the bottom group.
I need some advice what to do.I do help him with his sounds but it is very hard going.I'm not sure what to do to be honest.I don't want Ds to struggle all through school.

He won't. I promise you.

All this bottom group bullshit annoys me, no such thing, they all learn at different speeds. Being split into phonics groups is normal.

What does the school special needs co-ordinator say about it all?

My DS1 is 7, nearly 8 in year 3 and found the whole reading and writing thing so hard for the first two years, not in a struggling way, he has moderate dyslexia, in spite of that he has really come into his own in the last year, found his feet, got comfortable.

Don't push him too hard, make it fun at home when and if you do anything, school is exhausting when you are little, and 4 nearly 5 is so young, please PLEASE do not worry, time is what counts here.

carocaro thank you for you post.
I do feel some times that to much is expected of Ds.He comes home with alot of work to do,at least one sheet a night. It is just to practise writing letter but i still think its alot.
His teacher made me feel like i wasn't helping Ds at home, because i don't make him do his homework.I do get it out and look at it with Ds but i don't make him do it if he doesn't what to.
I haven't spoke to Senco yet,but the teacher has.I have parents evening in a couple of weeks so i want to write afew things down to ask his teacher and Senco. Not sure what yet though.

I'M A SALT WITH A PARTICULAR INTEREST IN reading (oops).
Just completed a hefty research project on it.
If you want to help him, you will not access a better resource than Headsprout.

Fun, easy peasy to follow and based on watertight research.
