Question about IEP voting

I attended the first IEP meeting for my ds yesterday. (I hadn't realised how complicated the whole process is!) Anyway, the odd thing about it was the voting... He's in a split placement between 2 different schools and 1 school had just the main teacher from the class, the other school sent 3... all get to vote. Is this really the way it goes? Had I known this, I think I would have brought dh and a few friends! Does anyone know if what the rules (if there are any) are around the votes?

What on earth do you mean the "voting" I have never come across "voting" in any context on IEPs! Does your child have a statement, are you talking about an annual review?

Hi Mommy - How old is your ds? My ds had an IEP for about three years of primary and we just had regular meetings with his class teacher (ds, me and teacher) in which progress was discussed, targets arranged and agreed upon, and everyone signed a form. Very simple and relaxed. Never heard of voting!

voting?

what are they voting on? what targets are set? whether he reached them?

i've never heard of voting at all...

for ieps, (and particularly in a split setting) the important thing is to agree targets that are meaningful for the child (we always ask therapists advice, but not sure flavour of sen) and agree how they will be worked towards (in each setting)...

have you googled 'smart targets' for ieps? it might give you a better idea of what should be happening... i'd love to hear what on earth the voting is all about - sounds very odd....

Love it - democracy in education. Let's not go with the targets that are best for DS. Let's go with the one that is most popular

I am not aware of any "voting" in IEP's. you need a copy of the "dcfs SEN code of Practice Toolkit. it contains guidance on IEP's etc, it is free and posted free (Government document). You will need to know this document well the code is different in england and wales. Contact the school and ask them to go through the process and why they adopted the "voting". Always remember you know your child best, and that the SEN Code of Practice states that you are an equal partner in this process. Any documents (IEP's/reports etc) should be sent to you well in advance of any meetings.

I don't know what you mean by voting. I'd have thought the most sensible thing would be for the different schools to have their own IEP's based on ds's needs and taking into account the resources available at the different schools.

voting? there's no voting in IEPs. You discuss targets and agree. You are all working for the same goal.

Sorry to hijack slightly but I have a question about split placements. Is it true that they can only be on the roll for one out of the two schools they attend?
