Doctors examination for Satement is this normal procedure?

My DS is currently being formally assessed for a statement of special needs for Dyslexia
I have received an appointment for him to be seen by a Paediatrician, does anyone know if this is normal procedure?

DD1 was already under 3 Consultants, plus physio plus VI teacher when she was statemented at 2.5. I would imagine being referred to a Paed for assessment is quite usual.

2 Ed Psychs have diagnosed him with severe dyslexia just wondered why a Paediatrician would need to see him! as it's not a physical problem he has.

I think the LEA need to seek 'medical evidence' as part of the assessment.
I had to see a paediatrician for DS's statement, he has AS and has already seen different paeds but this was a new one who was only seen once for the statementing. He just went through some basic questions on development/history, took height, weight, eye, hearing test and some balance exercises too. Took about an hour. Seemed to be a box-ticking exercise really as his previous reports had much more information.

Yes, it is necessary to have medical input to a statement even though there may be little to include.

They need to be sure they have the fullest picture before making a decision.
