How far behind is just unacceptable?

DD is in Y2 of mainstream, statemented for 20 hours plus another 6-10 on school action plus.

At long last we have got a rather "concise" breakdown of her P levels...but how far behind her peers would you say is differentiation just not going to work?

Sinclair, sorry- you know what life is like and I have only just come back to this.

Basically the Head of the SN Primary is trying to get specialist hubs set up in Secondary schools within our LEA area...the LEA are opposing it at the moment as they feel it would make the SN school to big...but then again the MS schools are all so inclusive and the system is working so well isn't it!!!! NOT!!!

I have dug out the DSA inclusion manual and was reading through last night...still not really sure which way to turn. Either way I have a fight as the SN school is already oversubsribed but I believe Amelia is up for review on their panel in Term 3 or 4 looking at a "possible" placement in September 09, when Amelia will be starting Junior School!

i am currently waiting to hear about dla for ds2 who has dyspraxia and other developmental delays. he is now in year 3 at school, currently has the OT going in once a week to work with him. his SAT scores confused me a little, he was on P7 for writing, P8 for reading, and got normal scores for his age for science and maths. he uses a laptop for most of his written work at school because his writing is abismal, however his spelling is pretty good, but his reading lets him down quite badly. i think his main problem is seeing the letters on paper, because he cant read very well at all, but he can spell words and then not be able to read them when they are written down. i'm not sure if there is something wrong with his eyes or if he has a perception problem.

Cherry - My dt2 has dyspraxic and adhd traits and he has the same issue as regards spellings. His reading isnt great but his spellings are good, Ask him to spell "night" and he gets it no bother but if you ask him to read it he would struggle. He is very longsighted but with his glasses tests within the normal range in vision tests, I think its a visual processing/perception problem although he is very good visually in other ways like identifying patterns, doing lego well etc.
Dingle - we have recently moved Dt2 to a unit attached to a local mainstream school and its fantastic. So much more time can be given to each child, the teacher and Ta are both qualifued as special needs teacher/Ta. There are 11 in the class , from yr1 to yr4 and for non academic activities they join mainstream. This means that often within the class there are not even 11 there as at least a couple of children are doing mainstream activities at any one time. I too was worried that Dt2 wouldnt be challenged enough but that has not been the case, They follow the NC where possible and in areas like spellings and number facts where Dt2 is at the right level for his age he gets the same homework as dt1 who is in the MS part of the school. In other areas the teacher is starting at the basics (only been there for 7 weeks) and making sure there are no gaps in his knowledge as he progresses through the work.

It was a hard decision for me to make especially as I had DT1 to consider too but I know Dt2 would not be receiving the same level or quality of attention if I had kept him in MS. He would only have received 2 hours a day which would not have been enough but even if I had been offered a FT 1 to 1 I think I would still have opted for moving him
