Help with missed vaccinations for anxious autistic teenager

My 14yo autistic DD missed some of her vaccinations as a toddler/child. I want her to get them now but she is too scared. I have asked for help but told 'we can't hold her down'. Does anyone have any advice or know of anyway to get help with this?

Who have you spoken to about it so far?

Have you spoken to the school nursing service/0-19 team?

Some areas have a team who will help with vaccination of those with additional needs. It is worth asking around to see if your area does. In some areas this team is part of the LD team but they will sometimes help with vaccination of autistic individuals who don’t have an LD.

Has DD had any support with her anxiety around it? Has she seen a play therapist or clinical psychologist?

Is DD under a paed? If so, speak to them. It is only done when all other options have been exhausted, but sometimes sedation can be arranged.

One question to consider is if DD has capacity? In some cases, restraint can be used.

You would find EMLA cream useful, OP.

I use it and don't experience any discomfort at all.

I would also check where the best place is for her vaccinations to be done.

I have mine at Guy's, where a separate unit does them. The nurses are brilliant.

You may have something similar locally.
