Sharing an older SEN diagnostic report with a new school

DC2 will be starting at a new school in September. The admission team of the new school emailed today asking for a copy of the diagnostic report, after I disclosed the diagnostic in the enrollment forms. it's 4 years old, DC was just 6 then, in year 1 with challenging behaviors, I am reluctant to share it as i feel there are elements in there which are not relevant for the new school, plus are very personal to our family which I don't think need to be shared to effectively support DC2 in the new school. DC was medicated straight away which has been life changing. I am very happy to share all school reports and their current school learning support plan. In any case, I think this should be sent in confidence to the SENco not to an administrator in the admissions.

for context, DC1 is also changing school but going to another school, also selective and independent. that other school has told me they don't want to see the ADHD diagnostic report, but have asked for the individual learning plan, and any exam accommodation in place and contact details of learning support. they are much more focused on the continuity of care and ensuring exam access is maintained, which I prefer. this was also run by admissions, but at the time of application, though it feels less intrusive.

I just wondered how others are doing it. thanks

I wouldn’t be sharing the diagnostic report in your circumstances.

I am a SENCO. I can understand why they would ask for it - the diagnostic report often contains useful information and recommendations beyond "he has ADHD". But I can also see why you don't want to share it, and you are within your rights to say no.

Another thing to be aware of: did the previous school have a copy? If they did, then it should be transferred automatically as part of the school transfer. If you explicitly do not want this to happen, I would suggest speaking to the old school and asking for it to be deleted from his records before transfer.

@ThesebeautifulthingsthatIvegot thank you
This is where and why I am a little puzzled.. new school admission said they want it as they have nothing on file about it, but our school gave a reference a few month ago and I would have expected them to mention it in there, DC is on the SEN register there and has some sort of a plan.
the current school has a copy of the first private diagnostic and a copy the NHS letter that just confirmed the diagnosis as we were seen by the NHS later on, the NHS diagnostic report has quite a few errors and typos, including misreporting things.
I think I am going to send the NHS short letter addressed to "headteacher" and her current plan.
And ask to speak to our SENco as well. thank you !

The old school can't/shouldn't transfer files until he has started there. So it makes sense that they don't have them. But I don't really understand why the new school wants it now. You'd be fine to say no

@ThesebeautifulthingsthatIvegot they are just getting organised for September. they are closing for the summer in a couple of weeks.
Our school has said they won't transfer anything until the end of their term which goes on for longer
