AIBU?

I followed a sign at my DC school offering help with SEN, benefits, housing, etc. After I spoke to the person and she convinced me to share DD’s neurodevelopmental referral, I found out that she’s a social worker working for the LA. AIBU to be scared?

You don’t need to be scared.

Have u ever had experience with one? I know my view is a bit stereotypical but I have the impression that I will be under scrutiny. Also, from what it looks like she can’t help me with applying for an EHCP. She’s in an early help program specifically designed to avoid the statutory path.

Yes, I have experience with lots of social workers. I have DC who have had social care assessments over the years and DH and I have carer’s assessments. Children’s Services play an important role in supporting families of disabled DC. Although too many families are left without that support or only have it because they push for it.

Early Help can support with things like DLA and EHCPs. Most of the time early help is provided by people (e.g. family support workers/practitioners or early help worker) other than social workers themselves.

I don’t know. I think this particular woman did some very questionable things. She was asking me to print a letter I had already sent her via email. She was insisting on me printing that letter and taking to the school. I had the impression she wanted to take me to the school ground for some reason that she didn’t share with me. Her behaviour made me really suspicious about her. I mean who in 2026 needs a physical copy of a document? I’m not sure…

I wouldn’t judge someone for asking you to take a physical copy of a document to the school. That’s not suspicious. There are occasions when a physical document is preferred and there are plenty of people who prefer to work from physical documents.
