Clueless report comment?

Am I right to be really annoyed that on my daughter’s school report for one of her subjects her one target was to be more attentive during complex explanations and focus more to improve progress. She has inattentive ADHD and ASD but is very gifted although underperforming in this subject compared to where she should be. She has seen her 3 or 4 times a week all year and has only another 19 or so in the class.

That target sounds wooly and certainly not a Smart target!! Does she have a one page profile reminding teachers of her needs and how best to meet them? Should be strategies listed on how to meet her needs.
A drama teacher once told us our daughter “ has some problems with her social skills” My DH interrupted saying you do know she is autistic? She said oh yes yes, carried on saying how the problems presented ending with we needed a word with her! Unbelievable.

@24Dogcuddler yes she has support plan document with all sorts of strategies. She is very bright and usually masks very well so i imagine this document is largely ignored however. This is the only subject she is being called up on needing to pay more attention and appareently the classes are pretty chaotic. However, her grasp of the subject details is excellent and I think she gets very bored in the lessons, which are very basic. I think she might be underperforming due to making careless and inattentive errors through being bored.

Like your experience, the ignorance and lack of grasp of the basics of SEND difficulties, makes me so mad as a parent. My DD is AuDHD.

Hard work isn’t it. Maybe speak to the SENCO? Does she have an EHCP or review meetings?

I too would speak to the SENCO about that comment and about what further support the school is going to provide.

If you have the contact details for the teacher, I would contact them directly too. Do you know if the class teachers are aware of DD’s SEN and her support plan? Some schools are dreadful at passing on information.

Havinamoment · Today 14:12

@scoopofmintchocchipicecream yes, the teacher should be aware of her support plan and she has access arrangements for assessments with 25% extra time. I have been told all teachers have been sent her support plan. Yes, good idea that I am going to be booking a meeting. I also think it is a wider issue in other subjects that the support is not happening but that the SEN profile is being used as a stick to beat her with and almost stereotyping her but without any of support in place, apart from extra time for tests.

Is it not the strategies that are off, rather than the goal itself though? As in, to follow more complex instructions by doing x with support from y. The ADHD means she needs strategies to help her focus, not that she shouldn’t try.
