My daughter (6) started at a new mainstream school placement in February with an EHCP.
Before she started, I was concerned that parts of the EHCP were too vague and didn’t clearly specify the support she should receive. I went to mediation to seek more specific wording around daily support and provision. The LA and school felt the wording was adequate and said the school needed “flexibility”. I also wanted new diagnostic evidence ADHD report to be considered and included in needs section b., and we’re still awaiting a SALT report.
I’ve now decided to commission a private Educational Psychologist assessment. Part of the reason is that I’m concerned about my daughter’s academic needs, as she is working below age-related expectations. I also feel that the current EP advice was not properly incorporated into the EHCP, and much of the wording remains vague.
I would like the EHCP to include more specific provision, including targeted literacy and numeracy interventions in small groups.
Part of the reason I’ve gone down this route is that the school doesn’t seem to be consistently following the EHCP. For example, the LA therapies team emailed to say the school had refused a morning sensory circuit and only agreed after I shared how upset my Dd is.Even then, they said sensory circuits would only take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the afternoon.
Communication has also been limited. The teacher said in our first meeting that we’d arrange a targets meeting, but months later it still hasn’t happened.
There is a TA in the class supporting a non-verbal child, as well as my daughter and other children. I was told there are two children with EHCPs in the class.
I understand the advice to “get the SENCO on your side”, but I also feel it’s my responsibility to ensure my daughter receives the support she needs. I sometimes feel guilty for challenging things, especially when the school seemed to prefer the EHCP to remain vague.
what is the best way to
handle the Senco?
