How can I support my six-year-old with dyscalculia over summer?

How can I support and help my child 6.5yrs old who’s been diognosed with dyscalculia, he can count to 100, recognise all the numbers, and count in 10s, he can do very basic addition(5+4)but no subtraction, he can not count in 2s or 5s, I don’t even know where to start but I know I need to be helping him throughout the summer.

he absolutely hates doing maths because it’s so hard for him so I will do as much as possible through play but I don’t know where to start.

any advice or guidance would be great.

thank you

Not play based ideas, but for ideas on a tablet/laptop if that would work, you could look at Numbershark and Anton.

If you subscribe to Reading Eggs then you also get access to Maths Seeds which I thought was good. I did quite a lot of both with DD at that age. She doesn't have dyscalculia but Maths makes her exceedingly grumpy! It's gamified and fun.

Thank you both so much, I’ll be checking these apps out later ☺️

There's a lot of info on Dyscalculia online that can be helpful for both you and your child. Please see some of the links below and engage with the networks as they can really support you both. Your child will be doing Maths for the next 10 years in a school (12 if they don't pass their GCSE Maths) so the sooner you get the right support, the better and less stressful for you both!

I really hope this helps

I've used the book 'plus 1' with my 6 year old dyslexic son with a lot of success. It might seem dry to an adult but because the structure is predictable and it's set up so each step gradually builds on the last one, he's actually completely fine doing 5-10 minutes a day. The blurb says it's also suitable for dyscalculia. It works a lot on e.g. being able to count on starting from any given number, being able to count backwards in 1s, 2s and 10s. The follow on book is 'power of 2'.

brilliant i have just had a look and i think ill go ahead and get one :)

im going to be doing 20 mins a day so this will be good for 5/10mins and then ive purchased some board games and dominoes, bits and bobs to help so fingers crossed we master the basics and build up his confidence.
