School start in nurture provision instead of mainstream, looking for experiences and advice HELP!!!

Hi I’m just looking for some advice and reassurance from parents who may have been through something similar.
My little boy is 4 and due to start primary school in September and we’ve recently been told he may be offered a place in a nurture provision instead of starting straight in mainstream full-time. He has ALN with an IDP already in place for emotional regulation, behaviour and communication. Nursery and early years inclusion feel he may benefit from a smaller setting with more support.
I’m feeling really overwhelmed because I always imagined him starting in mainstream with his peers, and I’m worried about him being separated, missing out socially, or ending up there long-term. They’ve explained it’s meant to support children and can be temporary, but I still feel really emotional and unsure what the right decision is.

Has anyone else’s child been in a nurture provision or similar setting at Reception age? Did it help? Were they eventually able to transition into mainstream? I’d really appreciate hearing honest experiences as I’m struggling a bit with it all right now. ❤️

I’d try to see this as a positive. I know it’s not what you had in mind.
The Nursery and Early Years Inclusion staff wouldn’t have suggested it if they didn’t think it was the best option for your DS.

The Nurture provision will be a much calmer and far less overwhelming introduction to school. It will give time for further assessment and to implement strategies and interventions to improve his communication skills.

Reception class can be really overwhelming and often there is an expectation to sit and listen for increasingly extended periods ( either whole class or groups) for teacher led input for phonics etc.

In a Nurture setting there will be far more emphasis on small group or individual learning.
Your son will be in a calmer, quieter learning environment which should enable him to reach his potential in EYFS.
I’d be asking about any visits to Reception class for some continuous provision or outdoor play.
Not everyone will have this opportunity. I’d go for it!

Have you been to look at the nurture provision and spoken to staff? If you are being offered this, I would take it. It doesn’t mean DS can’t transition to mainstream in future if that is suitable.
