My sons 10 he’s on the ASD pathway, been waiting quite a while now, my sons struggling in school a lot, he’s very clever boy, but social side of things can be to much for him at times, they have separated him from he’s class friends & now goes out with the younger children in school at break times/lunctimes.. which this has been going on for a while now & he’s getting fustrsted by this and wants to be with he’s friends… they have my son on a behavioural contract… which he finds it very hard to follow most of time time due to him having traits of ASD, Anxiety, OCD & TICs. They have told me last week that my sons coming to the end of this behaviour contract & things don’t seem to be working & was saying there going to have to look at a manage move, but the schools they are saying is more behaviour I just feel like they ain’t taking things into consideration at all because the last thing I want for my son is in a school like that… my son is so emotional about things he just don’t know how to regulate himself sometimes I just need some advice really… :(

What support has the school tried? What outside agencies have they approached for advice? Has an EHCNA been requested?

Managed moves require your consent.

He has Elsa support in school, & mist team also come in to see my son. Sorry what’s EHCNA ? I’m new to all of this.

yeah I’ve told them I’m not willing for my son to go to a school like that, he has been suspended since Thursday last week he’s able to go back tomorrow to see how things go. Just seems so unfair.

Have they put a SEN support plan in place? What support has been given? A 'behaviour contract' puts the blame on your child rather than doing what school should be doing - following assess, plan, do, review. If they believe they can't meet needs, they should consider applying for EHCP. A managed move feels more like they are trying to move him rather than support. X

Has the school not provided any other support?

An EHCNA is an Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment. It is the assessment you request as part of the process of getting an EHCP. You can and should make this request yourself now. On their website, IPSEA has a model letter you can use.

You urgently need a meeting with the SENCO and preferably the HT.

Follow up all verbal conversations with emails to create a paper trail.

Was the suspension a formal lawful suspension? Depending on the situation, did you challenge the suspension? If you haven’t already it is worth reading the government’s suspension and permanent exclusion guidance.

The thing is when we have review meetings about he’s behaviour contract the SEN are never in the meetings, which I wonder why? They have Elsa support he’s only seen them a couple of times… & mist team come and see him now and again. But I just feel like there just not supporting him as they should. I’ve asked about a EHCP they’ve said because he’s very clever he won’t need one… but it’s the social side of things in school what’s too much for him & doesn’t help the fact that he’s not allowed with he’s class friends at break times.. he’s got to go with year 2. When he’s leaving this time next year for high school I just don’t think it’s great I’m so drained from it all

Ignore the school. They are wrong. Request an EHCNA yourself.

The school should be providing more support and making reasonable adjustments. Request another meeting with the school.

I will have a look into that, thankyou.

I’ve had a meeting with HT & he’s class teacher last week it was them who decided this… SEN is never in the meetings with us. I have asked for EHCP they’ve said he probably won’t get one because he’s very clever but not socially he struggles.

You can get EHCPs for academically able DC. The school is wrong.

You need another meeting. At the meeting, you need to raise SEN, SEN support, the school’s poor support so far, that they need to provide more special educational provision and reasonable adjustments, etc. Unfortunately, you will have to drive this process.

I'll post a link to the EHCP support thread.

A LOT of us have been told our children "don't need" an EHCP.

Like we'd do all this worrying and meetings for fun!
