How much feedback should mainstream school provide on SEN support?

How much feedback do you get from your SEN child's mainstream school? My primary DC has some 121 with a TA (no EHCP) due to being very slow to develop literacy. But we NEVER get feedback on what is happening / progress. We do have regular parent teacher meetings, but the teacher isn't very clued up on what the TA thinks / does so we're more or less in the dark.

The few times I've seen the TA in passing, she's very knowledgeable. But we never get access to that info or what our DC is doing.

I think you should know more than you do. I also think the class teacher should know more. The TA may be very knowledgeable, but if the teacher isn’t using strategies that work, it’s not consistent.

Id ask to see the SENCo and find out what support is in place, then you can reinforce it at home.

It sounds like the school can and should be providing more information than they currently are.

However, regular individual feedback directly from TAs isn’t always able to be provided when there isn’t an EHCP. The teacher and SENCO should be aware of what is going on and be able to provide feedback, though. Good practice is termly meetings as part of the APDR process. Although, many schools struggle to fulfil this because of the demands on time and staffing.

Could you email the SENCO requesting to discuss the interventions being provided, progress and support going forward?
