Best places to learn sign language? Online resources?

Not sure if this is the best place to post because I don’t really know if being deaf counts as SEN?

DN is deaf, we found out recently. I want to try and learn some sign language because we look after DN&Ns often. My brother can actually already sign but he’s not a great teacher (tried to teach me to drive and I was crying within 10 mins lol) and I he won’t have the time.

For anyone who has learned or is learning these are my questions:
Did you lean online or have in person lessons, do you think in person is actually easier?
How long did it take?
Anything you found particularly helpful?
I’m not sure if this is a stupid question but I have horrible hand eye coordination, is that going to make it harder?

I would prefer free resources to start with but I’m not opposed to spending money at all.

A child who is Deaf has SEN.

When previously helping someone, I saw Doncaster Deaf Trust (you don’t have to live in Doncaster) had a free online course. I don’t know if they still run it.

Sometimes councils run free courses. Worth checking if your council does.

I know there’s a place near us where you can like practice with people so I think once I’ve got some basics down that’s the next step. Thank you!

You need to find out what signs are being used. If she’s only young it might be Signalong or Makaton then BSL when older.
There are lots of free resources and videos online. Some SALT depts post them. Local SALT depts or SEN support services run courses.
