4yo DS suddenly scared of baths

4yo DS (awaiting autism assessment, I believe has SPD too) has always loved water . LOVES the swimming pool, previously loved being in the bath and splashing lots.

Over the last couple of months he’s become very fearful/upset about the bath. Given that it’s autumn and not covering him in sunscreen etc I’ve chosen my battles and only making him bathe twice a week. He’s adamant that the bath be about an inch deep - honestly shallower than my 6 month old baby has a bath.

I’ve tried expensive Lush bath bombs/jellies which he likes but still adamant the bath must be shallow. He screams the place down when I try to wash his hair “please mummy stop”. I really don’t think it’s a battle of wills - it’s true anxiety/distress. The shower is even more upsetting for him than the bath.

he has a lot of sensory issues but then I don’t understand why he’s still in love with the swimming pool if he now hates water. He did say this evening that he’s worried about water going onto the floor incase it “makes the house mouldy” - I’ve previously told him off for splashing water up onto the ceiling incase it makes the ceiling mouldy so maybe this is all my fault.

Do I try to get him to bathe more frequently almost as “exposure therapy” or shall I just accept that he is getting a weekly wash in the swimming pool (half joking)

If you use the search function there's been some good threads on this before. I'll have a look.

What is DS like washing his hands? What about washing his face at the sink?

You would have to be careful but would DS sit in paddling pool in the bathroom or kitchen if there isn’t enough room in the bathroom? It would be a bit of a squash at 4, but depending on how big he is, would he sit in a baby bath?

Has DS had a sensory OT assessment?

Has DS just started school?

How are DS’s anxiety levels more widely?

Ds is autistic and we've had similar issues with baths/showers that we've now resolved. For now I'd accept it and not push as it's likely to make things worse. Exposure therapy rarely works for things like this.

If its because he's afraid of getting water on the floor could you put a tarp or some towels on the floor and tell him he doesn't have to worry. We use a tarp as ds can splash at times. Maybe all he needs is some reassurance.

Thank you for the replies and sorry I didn’t respond! As of the last few days DS has suddenly decided he loves the bath and had a 60min bath this evening!!! Have no idea what’s happened to change his mind but I’m grateful. I guess a lot of these things are temporary
