Finding the right school for an autistic, academically able child (EHCP)

Hi all,

I’m desperately looking for advice to help with school choices for my DS who is 4. He’s autistic (gestalt language profile), academically bright, and we're in the process of organising his ECHP. He loves school, and is very academic but needs additional 1:1 support for his communication and interaction skills.

At the moment we are worried his school is great with the C+I aspects of his learning, but don't push him academically and that may affect his ability to concentrate in class or participate in activates. The school is also very stuck in their ways and are reluctant to accept any suggestions to help improve his learning (e.g. we asked our SLT to observe him in lesson and suggest ways to incorporate GLP learning, but they were very defensive of incorporating these ideas).

We're finding it difficult to get a school that would both meet his C+I needs and academic ability. So would really appreciate any advice on any primary schools you may know which are like this? We're flexible on location as long as its in England (currently based in West Mids, but work remotely).

Thanks in advance!

Are you looking for mainstream or specialist?

Be aware if you move LAs with an EHCP, the new LA will become responsible for the EHCP and review it. They will potentially amend or even cease to maintain. You will have the right of appeal, but it is something you need to be aware of. There is also the chance they will undertake a reassessment of needs. And if you move during the EHCNA process, it can delay things.

An EHCP can mean the provision DC requires isn’t optional.
