My year has been struggling with EBSNA since last term of yr 4. She had recently ASD diagnosis and it was transition point to a new school which pushed her into . New school have just agreed to flexi schooling agreement where she attends one lesson a day. Just realised I have the whole of the rest of the time to keep her occupied. Any ideas or just moral support.

Depending on DD’s needs, you could look at home ed groups, trips out, things around DD’s interests (music, sport, gaming, cooking, gardening, art, pottery, Lego…). If you want something more academic, there are lots of online resources - some free, some paid for. You can do some science experiments at home. There are loads of options.

Rather than flexischooling, have you considered requesting section 19 provision and also requesting an EHCNA?

We do need an ECHP but our local authority automatically rejects parentally applications and LEA would’nt consider it until they’ve done a term in the new school.

I’m wondering about section 19 but in my child’s mind this is her new school and she won’t be going any where else.

Request an EHCNA. If the LA refuse, appeal. A child doesn’t need to be in the new school a term. The only test for an EHCNA, which is the first threshold you need to look at, is a) has or may have SEN, and b) may need special educational provision to be made via an EHCP. Anything else, including requiring a child to be in their new school a term, is unlawful.

Section 19 provision can be in addition to part-time school. It doesn’t have to mean DD leaves her new school.

Thank you this is helpful. Our LEA is one of the top in the country for rejecting ECHPs.

Don’t worry about that. You can go above the LA so that doesn’t matter.

I’m not sure if another setting in additional school is in her best interests while she is in burn out. But there is no knowing how long it will last. For now her support worker from lamguage and communication is going to pull back from their weekly 1:1 because they don’t wand to overload DD. They have been fantastic, even going into lessons at the new school to see what she is experiencing and coming to last minute early morning meeting with me and school to advocate for her.

It’s so difficult just not know what is best.

If DD can’t cope with another setting, it doesn’t have to be another setting. It doesn’t have to be traditional academic education either. It can therapeutic. And even if DD can’t cope with interaction with someone else, there are options such as pre-recorded content if that works for DD, subscription boxes/services and resources/equipment/memberships, etc.

Thank you. I will have a look into it. I’m not sure if she can cope with work it’s self at moment.

It doesn’t have to be academic work. It could be based on art, music, gaming, baking, gardening, Lego… whatever DD’s interest are.
