A-levels after age 18

Desperately need advice for my 18 year old daughter with ASD and frontal lobe epilepsy. She wants to take 2 A-levels but is too old to enrol in private online schools.

Education has been difficult, especially as she was diagnosed with epilepsy during her GCSE year, stopped going to school and had to take exams a year late, dropping 4 subjects just to get through it all in one piece.

She started an Animal Management course last year but found it very difficult socially and attendance was poor, although she did leave with a qualification.

During that time she became an avid reader and has decided to do English Lit and Psychology A-level.

She is too old for most online schools and doesn’t have EHC, although she does have enhanced PIP, so not sure about accessing funding. Can anyone recommend an online tutoring provider for over 18s? Thank you.

Online A level provision is normally only funded via an EHCP or privately.

I would start by looking what exam centres are close by and which boards they offer for A level English Lit and Psychology.

For A level English Lit, you could look at Nexus Educate, Arts Discovery and Homemade Education.

For psychology, you could look at LESSONing the Load, Social Science Tutor and Psychology Tuition.

There are some online schools or online school type companies who allow 18+ to enrol. For example, Pembrokeshire College who offer English Lit.

NEC offer both.

Have you considered requesting an EHCNA?

Thank you@flawlessflipper

These all look really promising.
We were turned down for an EHCNA when we first applied 3 years ago. We should have appealed but had to focus on getting Hospital school provision as well as dad being diagnosed with dementia so it fell by the wayside.

Worried that if we go for a private school we won’t be able to get any help with funding. Have seen ads for LearnDirect but not sure this would be suitable.

Will explore your suggestions. Thanks.

You could request another EHCNA and appeal if refused.

Funding from the LA for A levels via an independent school/college or online provision is highly, highly unlikely without an EHCP. With an EHCP, it is possible, although may take an appeal.

I have heard mixed things about Learn Direct.

Hi. I’m wondering if anyone can recommend online school provision for over 18s. My daughter is an older student due to being diagnosed with epilepsy in her GCSE year and switching to Home Ed. She wants to study English Lit and Psychology A-levels.

We are interested in NEC and Pembroke, both recommended by a kind Mumsnetter on the SEN page, but wondered if there are any other options available before making our final decision.

Thank you.

There are other options as well as the ones I previously mentioned. For example, Oxford Online Learning offers both.
