Hi my LO was on the waiting list for im guessing Autism assesment. (They use Autism specialist and terms i don't understand) but have been told now on the recovery pathway as it is much quicker as they have all the evidence. Its apparently a new thing to reduce the lists.

Anyone heard of this or gone through it? I probably sound dense but I feel like im navigating everything blindfolded and being under quite a few different teams im completely confused and they keep changing the titles of the specialists/pathways so I get even more confused. Like the Autism specialist letter, they then referred to it as a multidisciplinary meeting...I would never link those two terms together. I don't understand any of it :(

It can be really confusing when professionals don’t explain what is going on. Often lots of initials are used too.

Never be afraid to say “ Can I just ask what this means?” Or “ What is this person’s role?”
Phone or email if you aren’t face to face.

Autism Specialist could be an Advisory Teacher or a Paediatrician or Speech and Language Therapist with a special interest or qualification in autism.
Some titles or terms are widely used and others may be specific to an authority or Trust which isn’t helpful.
The diagnostic pathway should be multidisciplinary, lots of professionals meeting with the family to discuss and share information e.g. speech and language difficulties, sensory needs , play and social skills etc.

Look on the SEN Local Offer for the autism pathway and services in your area. There will be a Parent Partnership service (again various names used) or support groups who can help you to navigate the system.

Different areas run their services differently. Sometimes different areas can use the same terminology to mean different things.

If you don’t understand something, ask.
