Fixed Term Exclusion meeting

Hi all

My DS5 was issued a fixed term exclusion (2nd one) for today. We have a reintegration meeting tomorrow. Has anyone experience this type
of meeting before? We didn’t attend the first one as we didn’t send him being close to a half term break.

He is Autistic with suspected ADHD.

He asked to go in this morning to school…when we told him had to to stay at home he got upset and has been dysregulated for most of the day. He also said he felt sad too.

Has anyone had any experience of these exclusions and the impact it’s had on your child please? We can see this one has had an impact
on his mental health this time.

Thank you!

Look at what the school is doing to support DS’s SEN. What have they been doing and what else are they going to do going forward? Has the school looked at triggers? Have they thought that suspensions are not working? Does DS have an EHCP? Was it being adhered to when the incident happened? If not, why not? Has an early review been requested? If DS doesn’t have an EHCP, has an EHCNA request been submitted? If not, why not? Was the suspension lawful?

@perpetualplatespinning thanks for your message.

to give a bit of background:

.His EHCP was denied after assessment. I’ve gone in an appeal.
.Due to the nature of his reaction (aggression) he was excluded in accordance to the behaviour policy.
.The question was asked back in Feb as to what they’ll do stop any further FTE. They said they have all the support in place and this has been noted down on all paperwork.
.Current trigger seems to be transition in to the next year. I also feel it’s a bit of burnout too.
.Our next question will be to ask if they exclusions are working.

What needs to be put in place to avoid a further exclusion? More support, more adaptations, more flexibility?

It is a tricky time of year. There’s still a few weeks until the end of term, but children ( and teachers) are approaching burnout and resilience can be compromised.

The school shouldn’t just be saying all support is in place. As the saying goes insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results… Ask what they are going to put in place to avoid further suspensions.

Is the school making reasonable adjustments to the behaviour policy?

Has the school asked outside agencies for advice?

When is your appeal? If it isn’t soon, I would ask the school in writing if DS is at risk of permanent exclusion. If the answer is yes, I would use that to request an expedited hearing.

@perpetualplatespinning @Bluevelvetsofa your pointers are really useful, will definitely ask these questions. I have asked the question if DS is at the risk of permanent exclusion in writing but they ignored the question. I'm going to organise a meeting with SENCO and ask this question again.

I don't have a date for the appeal yet as the paperwork was sent off last week.

When you ask the question about PEX again, if they are supportive of your EHCP appeal, explain why you are asking.

@perpetualplatespinning thank you so much, you have been incredibly helpful! 💐
