Transition plan to yr1

Hello.

I'm not sure if our expectations are too high, but we have been expecting a transition plan for our child who is heading into year 1 We have chased a plan, but nothing has been shared yet.

I appreciate they have a wider class transition happening (which we haven't formally been told about,) but given transitions, environment and relationships are key areas our child struggles, they does require additional planning.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

They may be planning it, but there are things that may need to be in place first

  • Recruitment of new teachers before they can confirm who is teaching which year group
  • Knowing the needs of the incoming cohort in reception and nursery
  • Waiting on EHCPs to be drafted/finalised because they will require specific provision

This is our situation at school now. All focus is currently on incoming early years, because that provision must be right first. Then we'll turn our minds to the rest of the school. It would be great to have the resources to start earlier, but we simply don't.

What do you feel would help your child? Some things we do are:

  • A transition book with pictures of new class and staff. It reminds the child of what will stay the same as well as changes, to reassure them that it's not all change
  • Extra visits to key places eg. Toilets, lunch hall, classroom
  • 1:1 time with the new teacher
  • Pupil profile shared with staff in the new year group
  • Holiday calendars to count down

I agree with @ThesebeautifulthingsthatIvegot. Plans might not have been finalised yet. Have you spoken to the SENCO?

Thanks @ThesebeautifulthingsthatIvegot good to hear it from the other side.

Would expect an additional transition plan for an individual child with these needs, or just the same as the class?

It depends on the child. Some DC with SEN won’t have individual transition arrangements. Some will. If you are concerned, speak to the SENCO. You don’t have to wait for them to contact you.

Very much agree with this. It sounds like your little one will need transition planning, so call the SENCo and highlight this. Maybe suggest from the list I put above what might help him.
