Severe Dyslexia - Huge disparity between written and oral IQ

Evening

I just wanted to ask if anyone else has been through something similar as we are with my daughter.

Shes 10 and in year 5 at school. She was diagnosed with dyslexia at age 7.
We moved her schools on September which has been so beneficial to her. Her new school are amazing and support her so well.

We have recently paid for some additional assessments for her for ADHD and Autism. Both have come back as traits but not enough for a firm diagnosis.

What has been confirmed flagged again is the huge disparity between her written and oral ability. Her written is circa 6/7 years old but her verbal in circa 14. She’s so intelligent but just can’t transfer it onto paper or read to a good standard.

We will be filling in her high applications later this year and we’ve been told that it’s highly unlikely that a main stream school will meet her needs without an ehcp. Her current school scribe and read for her most lessons and have adapted her education massively to meet her needs without the ehcp as they can see her potential and believe it would be sacrilege to let her sit there and just struggle.

Has anyone else been through something similar? We have a meeting with the high school we had intended on sending her to at the beginning of June. They’ve been very proactive in there approach so far but they have also said an ehcp needs to be applied for asap.

thanks for reading

xx

The secondary school is right. You should request an EHCNA ASAP. On their website, IPSEA has a model letter you can use. If DD requires a scribe and a reader, an EHCP is required. The primary school has let you down not requesting an EHCNA before now.

Has DD tried speech to text software and text to speech software?

Her previous primary school were terrible. She hated school so much and never wanted to go. They constantly fudged the targeted learning plans and lied to me. This current school has been doing everything they can to support Iris. They’ve have mentioned the ehcp as well and are willing to support the application in anyway they can. The only criticism I could have to the current school is their senco hasn’t done as much as id of liked but she’s only been in post about 2 months. She’s been catching up and finding her feet. When my daughter first joined the senco helped set up the initial support and her amazing teachers have ran with it and put everything they can in place that they can to help her.

The psychiatrist has suggested a local private school which has tiny classes and have a great sen programme but it would mean I would have 3 school runs to do in 3 different locations 🤦🏼‍♀️

You have left DD’s name in your posts. You might want to report your posts and ask MN to edit it.

If you go down the independent school route, you would need to ask a lot of questions. Not all independent schools are supportive of SEN. And they are likely to charge extra for the scribe/reader.

If you can get the independent school named in an EHCP, that can fund the fees and the support. However, to get it named in an EHCP you would need to prove the LA’s proposed school(s) can’t meet needs &/or it isn’t unreasonable public expenditure. You could then also look at transport.

The current school should really have requested an EHCNA before now.

I have a meeting with her current school after the school holidays. We are going to start the application asap. I think we will end up having to pay private to speed things up as time is of the essence now as I really believe if we’ve not got the ehcp sorted for her starting high school we will be in a whole world of pain.
I’ve rang the LA so many times and asked for their SEN support officers to call me back and they never return my call.
I had asked her previous school if we could apply for the ehcp and they said you can’t get them for dyslexia 🤦🏼‍♀️

Unfortunately, because of the wait for appeals, there’s no guarantee you will have an EHCP by the start of Y7.

The LA is not a reliable source of information. They often give incorrect information. IPSEA and SOSSEN are better sources of accurate information.
