After a long wait, my child has just been awarded DLA - High rate for care and Low rate for mobility. Is there anything else I can access for her now that she has been awarded DLA that may help/assist her and our family?

If you get universal credit then let them know. Depending on your income you can get carers allowance. You can use the dla award to access free carers tickets to local/national attractions. You can look at your local councils free concessionary bus pass and see if she qualifies. You can potentially use it to help get a blue badge if you feel she needs it.

In terms of support, we haven't found that it helped us access anything else.

Hi, thank you for replying. No I don’t claim universal credit as I am employed full time and not eligible. Thanks

Check if you would be eligible for UC now. With the severely disabled child element and carer element, the maximum someone can earn and still be eligible is higher than many realise.

Some LAs use DLA as part of the eligibility criteria for the local short breaks offer.

You can apply for a disabled railcard for DD. Although, this doesn’t always work out the best way of getting value for money with children.

With low rate mobility, DD won’t automatically qualify for a blue badge. However, you can apply and provide other evidence if you think DD needs a blue badge.

Lots of attractions/venues give free carer entry &/or reduced prices based on the DLA award.

There are lots of charities who offer grants for various things. They all have their own eligibility criteria. Although most don’t use DLA as part of that.

Is there anything in particular DD/the family needs help with?
