Can anyone suggest anything?!

My 5 year old daughter has autism. She’s non verbal and is extremely destructive (like to break everything she gets her hands on, then hysterically laughs when we tell her it’s wrong to do so)
we have redecorated her room 4 times since living in our house (3.5 years) and she keeps peeling the paint. We’ve tried different paints, OT cannot recommend anything to us either.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what we can do which isn’t going to require us to remortgage our house (wallpaper isnt an option!)
Thanks!

It does sound like DD would not have the ability to understand about ripping wallpaper off or peeling paint.
It may be that the walls have been visually over stimulating or she may not have liked the colour pattern or texture.
Have you attended any post diagnostic sessions to help with unpicking and understanding her behaviour and sensory needs?
If she attends a specialist setting can staff not advise? I know you have asked the OT. I’d be asking if she does this in school too or is it just her bedroom?
You could look at a Safespace or similar for her bedroom.

Have you tried padded walls or panelling?

If DD is doing it overnight, have you tried a safe space bed or similar as posted?

My pp should say as posted by @24Dogcuddler.

i actually have a meeting with school next Friday to discuss everything as well as other things such as behaviours etc. so I will hopefully get some information then. no we haven’t attended anything. Our local authority isn’t the best if I’m honest, so I go through school with everything as they are bloody brilliant. I will look into the safe spaces, thank you!

OT can fund a SafeSpace bed or similar.

Newlife offer emergency equipment loans which can include specialist beds.

@Mum998 So glad you have support through school. Ask them about Post Diagnostic support. There should be something in place e.g. EarlyBird Plus course. Probably a waiting list.

OT declined us due to her age? So been referred to camhs, hopefully hear off them soon!

We are looking into panelling currently, but the size of her room would mean it will cost hell of a lot of money. Her school is going to chase camhs to see how long the wait it before we look into paying for it ourselves!

You were fobbed off by OT. OT can help with adaptations and equipment for DC your DD’s age. OT can also have other input for DC your DD’s age.

If adaptations are required because of DD’s disability, you don’t need to fund it. You could apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant. That can fund panelling or padded walls.

If DD needs therapies such as OT more generally and MH therapy, it should be in F of her EHCP. Then it is the LA’s responsibility, and waiting lists are irrelevant. You should request an early review of the EHCP. On their website, IPSEA has a model letter you can use.

That’s really good to know. Thank you. We’ve been fobbed off countless times by different people and I’m getting quite sick of it if I’m honest. So thank you, I will ring OT next week
