Suspected SPD

Hi, I wondered if anyone can give me some advice snd support. My 6 year old daughter struggles a lot with wearing socks, certain clothing as she says it's itchy even when I've removed labels or tags. She may wear one item of clothing one week but won't wear it again. She doesn't like her nails being cut or at times, hair being brushed but she'll do that herself.
The sensory problems can cause extreme meltdowns and can become violent towards me or her dad. She also likes routine, asking daily 'who's doing bedtime' or what's happening that day. Her diet is also very limited as she sicks to the same foods daily.
She doesn't present any sensory issues in school, she is doing well in her year and is a brightly little girl.

Could anyone let me know how i can get help with the issues? I've spoken to her class teacher and GP but getting no where. I've read about SPD as she ticks a few boxes. Thanks 😊

Does sound as if she has some sensory needs. You would need an assessment from an OT who has done extra training in SPD/ Sensory Integration

This isn’t always available on the NHS and may depend on where you are.

The SENCO at school should have more knowledge than the class teacher. Inclusive schools may have sensory interventions or use sensory circuits for some pupils. This should be available without diagnosis. In class a sensory wedge, ear defenders or fidget items/ Chewellery may help depending on her needs.

If you want to do more reading/ research watch the Brain Highways videos on You Tube on Proprioception and Vestibular and Kelly Mahler on Interoception.
The book The Out of Synch Child has Fun is helpful. You could also look at ARFID for restricted diet.

An OT can help. Not all areas commission sensory OT on the NHS but if your ICB does it is worth looking at a referral. In some areas, you can self refer. If you can’t the school or GP will be able to.

For socks, have you tried seamless and seamfree socks? Do you cut labels out or unpick them? Cutting them out can be worse.

Request a meeting with the SENCO. They can provide support in school even if she appears to be managing at school (there will probably be signs DD isn’t managing, the school just isn’t seeing them or not seeing them for what they are).

Some people find the books the Out of Sync Child and The Explosive Child helpful.
