I hope someone can help . I have received a job as a SEND EHCP coordinator. I have not given an answer but tol the prospective employer i need two days to think about it. My current workplace is not unbearable apart from sometimes management being a bit difficult and there is lot of travel. Recently i found my current workplace been very more than usual changes so wanted to get out and went for this EHCP job. The salary is 200 pound more that is about it. The Pros is I do get all the school holidays paid as i work only term time that is 39 weeks instead of 51wks full time.this new job is 51 weeks.
I have been told by my friends and collegues that im going into a fire fit as the Local Authority EHCP job is not easy and very stressfull. It has high case loads with high turn over of staff due to the pressures , work load and difficult SEND Cases. I do not do well to stress as the last couple of years have gone through stressful family issues. Has obe done this job before with the LA and is my fruends correct in saying this is the worst decision i make. Can anyone please comment and advise? Should i stay well clear?

It's going to depend on where in the country you are, and the finances and policies of your LA. Best case scenario, you'll be helping children get help and support they really need. Worst case, you'll be denying them support you know they need.

But yes, it's likely that you'll be dealing with parents who are at the end of their tether because they've been fighting for their children to receive services for a long time. Parenting children with SEN requires an awful lot, even when you can access support quickly, which is rarely the case.

Will it be stressful in terms of long hours? probably not. Will you have to deal with upset, frustrated and exhausted people, and also have more cases than you have time to process and the LA has money to help? Probably.

The issue is i been told the role it self is very stressfull and SEND is in crisis even after reform. Im just worried i might get burnt out od high demands and caseloads. There is also a back log of cases i heard. Perhaps i should of researched bit more. Im just worried that its not what it seems

If you don’t do well with stress, it is not the job for you.

Personally, I wouldn’t be able to do the job because I wouldn’t be able to toe the party line with the LA’s unlawful policies and practices.

More like case loads of 50 plus apperantly and these are on LA time scales. There was a similar post on here and someone said turn over of staff is very high as they cant cope. Im not worried to do the job and its supporting families and children but i too have young children and flexibilty is important with less stress along with family life balance. Just do not want to make a mistake and jump . Wonder if anyone is doing or done an EHCP coordinator job and how they found it. My biggest concern is timescales and support as i do not want to fail any children . I know there is less bodies in the team and there is a recruitment shortfall.

Well LAs breach statutory timescales and fail children and young people all the time.

It’s not. There’s an incredibly high turnover. You’re taught unlawful practice. It’s gross frankly.

Do not kid yourself that ehcp coordinators support families. They’re the opposite.

Case workers are a nightmare for Sen families. To be fair they take lots take time off (stress not sure if they are or just playing the system)

Honestly its the worst job (only been on the receiving end of case workers) glorified admin role that don’t know the sen law. Plus all incompetent and they don’t receive any training (or just useless at their job) I’d take any admin job in any sector over a case worker working for the LA.

You will be expected to fail nearly every child and not help the child as that saves the LA money which is want they want. Less cash spent on each child is a win in the LA books / budget

I would do ANY job than be a case worker. Had 7/8 in 4 years never come across a nice / helpful one yet. If your in Surrey I’d run especially if you have to work for the (senior RC he’s the worst man I’ve ever come across 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 you would be ill working for that man - the worst person I’ve ever experienced in life)

I feel like there is a lot negatives than positives and money is not great for all the stress. I perhaps need to hold back.

This post is more about should i do the job or not than the faiiures of SEND AND EHCP as a whole??

You can't do a job like that without being affected by the failure of the system.

Jsn · 07/04/2025 10:58

I do not think me along will ever change a system which has been messed up. My worries are failing children and families. I like to take a challenge but scared of the horror stories and pressures . I think its under paid too for the work load. Probably why the high turnover of staff.

Caseloads of over 250 are standard. Very stressful role so if you don’t like being under pressure, don’t do it.
