Stealth dyslexia

Does anyone have any experience of getting a diagnosis of this condition, or is it not officially recognised? My 11yo DD just had an assessment with an Ed Psych who ruled out dyslexia, but what I've read about stealth dyslexia seems to fit her profile:

  • speech delay (runs in family)
  • struggled with phonics initially as she couldn't hear the different phonemes - placed in LA Sound Awareness intervention group but quickly got the hang of it.
  • In years 2 to 4 she was a strong reader several levels above her age, but then plateaued and is now reading 2/3 years below her age level
  • above average pseudo-decoding skills (73rd percentile) but weak reading comprehension (23rd percentile)
  • above average processing speed (86th percentile) but very weak listening comprehension/auditory processing (9th percentile).
  • Spelling and handwriting are also very weak (struggles to hold a pen - has never mastered tripod grip)

Just looking for some input on whether others would investigate further. School isn't very interested as she's well behaved and doing okay overall, but the fact that her grades in both English and Maths have dropped significantly since moving up to secondary school makes me feel I can't ignore it.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

A good EP would be able to recognise the profile what some are terming stealth dyslexia.

Request a meeting with the SENCO. Whether DD has dyslexia or not, the school should be supporting her.

Thanks, that's useful to know.

Also worth looking at auditory processing disorder - my DD struggles significantly with phonological awareness as a result of this.
