Speech Therapy In School

Hoping for a little help and guidance.

My little boys school referred him for speech therapy in 2022, after not hearing another for over 12 months we started some private sessions paid for by ourselves. Finally in January 2025 we were contacted by the NHS for our appointment. The lady diagnosed this issue with my son which was the same as private therapist and advised she would deliver a programme to my son’s school for them to do with him for 10 minutes each day. I was so happy to hear this as although we try our best to set time at home this can be difficult when he’s tired or his siblings so the thought of this being done when he’s in learning mode at school was perfect.

after the speech therapist attended school as spoke with his teacher school have advised they don’t have the facilities to do this as the classroom assistant who would usually be able to help with this is assigned to some SEN children within the class and doesn’t have the capacity to help my child.

Was hoping someone can advise if this is the schools responsibility to help deliver this, of course I’m more than happy to be doing this at home too alongside school. Surely speech therapy which was done as a referral from school should then be followed up by school otherwise I feel it’s been a wasted NhS appointment,

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Does DS have an EHCP? If he doesn’t have an EHCP including the provision, it is unlikely the school has the staff to consistently deliver this provision. Many schools now only have TAs for DC with EHCPs. Where they school has others, they would generally be used to support DC with challenging behaviour.

School budgets are stretched beyond belief, I wouldn’t expect them to do much. It’s great they’ve done the referral but the onus is on the home really, here. When my DC had SaLT in infant school (many years ago), it was v much our job to do!
