Sleep!

Firstly apologies if this isn't quite the right board but not sure where else to post.

Our 9 nearly 10 year old is sleeping in our bed, he has a learning disability and sleep disorder and this has worked for the last year or so but we want to transition him back into his own room. He has slept in his own bed before in the past very successfully. He doesn't understand the dangers of many situations so we need to know he is safe.

Before we do this we want to set up some kind of sensor so that we know when he gets out of bed so he doesn't roam around the house without us knowing in the night, I would never sleep if I thought he might be in the kitchen or bathroom unattended.

I've seen the floor sensor beams which I think might help but wondered if anyone has any experience of these or using a camera which will alert us if he gets up?
Thank you.

Do you need to know when DS gets out of bed or when he leaves his room? If the latter, you could put a sensor/alarm on the door. If the former, I would think about a specialist bed such as a SafeSpace bed or similar.

We have a Motorola baby monitor (camera and audio) in DS1’s room (but not for seeing when he is out of bed because his bed has sides and he can’t get out). Some people use CCTV cameras.

Ideally when he gets out of bed before he empties everything he owns out of the drawers and cupboards in search of something! I guess a door alarm would do the job for knowing if he is coming out of his room - although he can make a mess him room is fundamentally safe.

In that case, I would look at a specialist bed. If you don’t want to do that, do you have room to move some/all of DS’s things out of his room? Because even if you get an alarm that will alert you when DS gets out of bed, chaos could ensue in the time it takes you to get to DS.
