Yr9 SATS

ds1 has AS and ADHD..... and a broken wrist!!!

A he is taking all his SATS in the 'Individual learning unit' with a scribe...all his SATS but one.
yesterday he had MENTAL MATHS and was instructed to sit in main hall with all the other yr 9's... and no scribe.

as a result he was physically at a loss cos of his plaster cast making writing practically zero... and being in the main hall- not where he practiced SATS was both a challenge due to his AS and terrible as he was distracted.

the scribe in all other SATS is provided for 2 reasons- handwriting problems (not related to broken wrist- but hand eye co-ord)and keeping him focussed.

so my point is he came home fed up and feeling dissaponted as he couldn't keep up with the questions as they are fired at them 'every 10 seconds' (which may be his perception- i have no idea...maybe they get longer??)

i thought he'd get longer to do his SAT...and especially the MENTAL MATHS.

anyway...tis done now... anyone know how much of the final marks are from the MENTAL maths paper? as this may not be a battle worth fighting with the scool...however if it is a third odf the marks and because of what i mentioned above he scores hardly anything- then i don't think it was fair?

Hi Mum, I can't answer for year 9 SATs but I can tell you that year 6 SATs there are usually 20 questions with time limits of between 5 and 15 seconds. I would expect year 9 to be similar. The rules about scribes and extra time change all the time and you would have to ask the school. The criteria for extra time is extremely strict and tbh, at the primary school where I work, we don't even bother to apply anymore as even statemented children don't always have it granted.Have just spoken to my sons, (one about to take A levels, other about to take GCSE's) they both tell me they had 30 questions at year 9 with the times I said for year 6. Each question worth one mark. Hope this helps you.

Talk to his SENCO or whoever your main SEN contact is at school. His head of year should have been onto the broken wrist anyway.
Prob worth an appeal.

thanks to you both...its interesting to hear that the statemented kids don't always get the extra time , as none of my ds's are statemented and i always assumed that being statemented guaranteed such small things as this!!!!

what i have learnt from this is not to assume anything is being done at all...and come gcse time i shall have to be very proactive!!!

the senco has a very dim view of ASD as for the past few years they have had a specialist dyslexia programme...and now the funds for that have been split to cover ASD too.

so approaching the senco is always a prickly experience!

If he's been out of the hall for all his other SATs, he could have been for the mental maths. We have scribed 10 pupils individually for the mental maths this week - they had to be timetabled separately and held in a spare room so no chance to cheat etc; but all had opportunity for full concessions to apply. Any concession he has for other 2 papers should apply to mental maths. Questions are on a CD, and the pace is preset according to the type of mental calculation required. Sorry, I can't tell you off-hand how many marks are for this paper!

DD3 16 is dyspraxic. she is doing her GCSE's now and has extra time and a scribe, But this was all sorted out before her mocks. I spoke to her teachers and the SENCO about it. She was then asses a long with some other children to see if she would need these exam concessions and it was found that she would.
She is not statemented but on school action plus.
It is important to talk to the school to make sure your child gets the right exam conssesions.
