Atomoxetine and low mood does this settle?

My son who is 12 has been taking 10mg of atomoxetine since mid December. Initially the changes were very positive however he has recently become very low and distressed especially in the evenings around 8.30-10pm.

He has been searching suicide data and depression and also saying he doesn't know his purpose in life.

We are giving him a lot of support and the ADHD nursing team are aware. I'm just hoping to hear whether this may settle in time or is just not the right medication for him.

Stimulant medication was non tolerated either and resulted in a lot of crying and also self harm.

I don't want him to be medicated at all really but without it, he is receiving almost constant detentions at school which isn't great for his sense of self. The medication helps him to conform at school but I can't see any other positives at this early stage.

I am so worried about him.

Tia xx

Hi there. Did things work out for your son? My DD has tried stimulants and Guanfacine but they have been a disaster, now withdrawal effects from Guanfacine even worse, self harm and suicidal thoughts. Atomoxetine has been suggested next but I don't see it as a goer. I hope things are better for you, this is a tough old journey.

Hello
He is not on any medication but things have improved at school. He had some counselling which was helpful and also he has an EHCP now which I think has helped him a lot with school.
Also lots of focus on hobbies, skateboarding and scootering has been helpful.
I hope things improve for your DD too.
Other things that have helped us are omega 3 supplements and a weighted blanket has helped with sleep.
Good luck xx

Glad to hear it. I think we need to accept that mon medical interventions are going to be the way forward. Encouraging to hear things are better for you. X
