Help with child dla query

Hello, was wondering if anyone had some experience with applying for dla for their child in their partners name. I recently completed a new claim for our son, but felt it fair that if it was approved that he should have access to our sons money as he cares for him and incurs a lot of the extra expense such as particular foods or extra petrol due to mobility issues. Our other son has DLA and this goes into my bank. My issue is that hubby is dyslexic so I competed the form, but there was nowhere for me to declare that. Also worrying because hubby is not the best at telephone conversation (most probably on the spectrum). Can DWP allow me to handle the communication and paperwork, but make a payments into his account? Thank you for any advice.

Personally, I think you are making it more complicated than it needs to be. I would apply in your name. You can still give DP access to any money.

However, if you really want DP to apply, if it is just the form he struggles to complete, you can do the writing and DP can sign it.

For adult claimants who cannot manage a claim themselves, this includes managing a claim for a child, there is the appointee process. Once appointee for DP, you would complete the DLA form for DS/sign it/you would be responsible for the claim (because someone who needs an appointee can't apply for DLA for their child because they have been judged to be unable to manage a claim - you would use your details on the form and sign it otherwise DWP will write back to DP requesting either you sign/complete your details or the appointeeship is relinquished if no longer needed) but you could give DP access to the money. Personally, this is a needless layer of bureaucracy when the same outcome can be achieved by my first paragraph.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, it’s all been sent off! I was in a tizz photocopying all the evidence and form, and forgot to attach a cover letter. Now hindsight is a valuable lesson for me. I’m thinking to just send a letter, and hope for the best.

You are right though, I should have just applied myself. DS is 12, and if he does qualify for DLA then maybe we can change parental appointee ship for when he’s 16?

If DLA is awarded (and depending on the length of the award, renewed), a few months before DS turns 16 DWP will write asking if DS will need an appointee. If it is, someone can become DS’s appointee. It doesn’t have to be the same person as the person receiving DLA for DS before 16. If an appointee isn’t needed, any claim e.g. for PIP will be made by DS himself.
