Hi Everyone,
Does anyone know any books or documentaries etc about autism that I can give to my 16dd. She has high functioning ASD (diagnosed as Asperger's). Found out when she was 8, but now wants more in depth information. She has read and 'Strong Female Character' by Fern Brady. She says anything she's kind of found since has been more for parents of children with more complex needs, self-help books or outdated. Does anyone know any recommendations I can give her?
TIA💐

I don’t know if these are the type of documentaries you mean, but there is the Christine McGuinness unmasking my autism documentary and Inside Our Autism Minds documentaries. The latter covered a range of presentations including an adult woman so don’t be put off because some of the advertising focuses on other profiles/ages/males.

For books you could look at Girl Unmasked by Emily Katy and Unmasked by Ellie Middleton.

Sam from Made in Chelsea was diagnosed with ADHD and autism. There is a documentary on All4 following him getting assessed and diagnosed.

Chris packam did a show. I think it was aimed at parents but he spoke about his own autism.

Atypical is a fictional show and is a stereotype of a male autistic teen but I found it enlightening to see how autism impacts the family. I'm autistic myself and a parent of autistic kids. I certainly thought alot about how others are impacted watching that one.

I will be following this as not found much for adults. I'd recommend some FB groups but for a 16yo I don't think it's appropriate really as not always what I'd be happy seeing someone that age read as much of it is adult relationship struggles and advice

@OneBlackHeart if you are looking for another TV series rather than a documentary, there is The Good Doctor. I haven’t watched it myself. Autistic DD2 did. She found it an uncomfortable watch at times but overall thought an OK watch.

I liked The Good Doctor. It is a very stereotypical autistic person though (photographic memory, zero social skills).

Lessons in Chemistry is a good book (fiction) which has been made into a series on Disney+ (or possibly Apple TV...? Not seen the series, but enjoyed the book).

You could also look up Temple Grandin. She is an autistic woman who has written a few books and done some Ted Talks about autism. There is a film of her life starring Clare Danes (again, I haven't seen it, but heard it is worth a watch).
