Anyone doing flexischooling?

DS diagnosed autistic, potentially adhd too. Managing mornings at school - full day is far too much. EHCP application. Hasn’t reached compulsory school age yet (he’s still 4 and in reception) so atm I have him home in the afternoons and very happy to do that. Was considering home education but think the mornings are working atm and tbh better for me too.

Anyone managed flexi schooling long term and how do you manage it?

Hello, this can be a great option for children who find school full time overwhelming. I’ve seen it work well. Not all schools have heard of it though. I would join the Facebook group ‘Flexischooling Families UK’ as there are lots of people on there who do it and information about how to get it set up etc.

We did exactly this during reception too and it worked really well while we had an amazing TA in place and provision at home, but once he turned 5 we were told he needed to attend full time, by which time this and other factors (DS is autistic) led to school refusal and we had other issues going on.

I tried requesting a part time timetable for Y1, to essentially do flexi-schooling as part of the provisions in his EHCP (and had a plan for learning outside of school) but was told this wasn't allowed by the LA and by the various schools we spoke to so we're now homeschooling. I know there's a big push on school attendance, so I'm not sure how people are managing to get permission for flexi-schooling? I'd love to know - it gave us the best of both worlds for that short period of time, even if it was a lot to juggle.

@Scratchybaby sadly, because flexi-schooling is at the discretion of the school and many schools are not supportive of flexi-schooling (which is different to a part-time timetable), it is a case of finding a school who is willing. Some schools aren’t aware the attendance statistics don’t have to be seen as a negative for OFSTED, so it can help to reassure the school about that. With an EHCP, you could also go down the route of having provision written in F for some provision at school and some provision otherwise than at school/AP. That may take an appeal.
